You may have already heard about how beneficial it is to have a doula alongside you for your birth experience. There is evidence that it can lead to you being:

Why hire a doula?

People hire doulas for a variety of deeply personal reasons, reflecting their unique circumstances, experiences, and aspirations for childbirth.

  • A doula is a comforter: A doula is there to support the labouring mother in many different ways; pep talks, massages, labouring positions and relaxation techniques, to name a few. She also makes sure the birth environment is what the mother wants (dim lighting, soft music, and so on). She is experienced and can offer reassurance and guidance during what can be a stressful time.

  • Consistant Support: Throughout your pregnancy and if you give birth in hospital during your labour, you are likely to meet many different midwives and other health professionals. But you will only have one doula, a familiar face who advocates for you and speaks up in support of you and your preferences. This can be especially important for single parents, those without a strong support system, or whose partners don't feel comfortable advocating.

  • Extended support: A doula can bring peace of mind to dad or birth partner too: Doulas allow dads or birthing partners to take a step back, to rest and refuel, without any guilt attached. Knowing that their partner is being well-cared for and won't be alone can help the partner focus on the momentous occasion of becoming a new parent. Having an extra pair of hands makes a big difference to a mother's comfort and pain levels.

  • Experience and Guidance: Birth can be intense. Having a professionally trained guide by your side can provide reassurance and support. Doulas are trained to view childbirth as normal, so they are prepared for the sounds, positions, and behaviours that occur during labour. This can also help your partner remain calm and feel more confident.

  • Help in a New System: Some women are unfamiliar with the UK healthcare system and the NHS, doulas provide invaluable assistance in navigating unfamiliar medical practices and advocating within the system.

  • Preparation: Parents, especially those having a baby for the first time might want help to decide, from the exhausting amount of equipment there is to buy, what you will really need, what your baby space will look like and what local groups are available to join.

  • Trauma and Fear Management: For those with previous traumatic experiences or fears about childbirth, doulas offer a reassuring presence and continuous support, aiming for a positive and healing birth experience.
